Leadpages Review: More Than Just a Landing Page Creator




You're looking for a fast and easy way to develop high-converting landing pages that don't need any coding, right? 

Creating a landing page used to necessitate constant back and forth with designers and developers. 

It is now possible to do it from the comfort of your own machine (no meetings required!). 

But in order to make the dream a reality, you'll need to hire a landing page designer.

One such tool is Leadpages. And in my Leadpages analysis, I'll dive into whether or not it's the best platform for you, as well as have an in-depth look into how Leadpages operates. 

Overall, I'm impressed with Leadpages' ease of use and accessibility. But don't get too far ahead of ourselves!


What exactly does Leadpages do? A brief peek at the feature set 


I'll certainly go over these features in more detail later on. But, since Leadpages has a few distinct but intertwined functions, I figured it would be useful to take a brief look at them before I go hands-on and show you around the Leadpages gui.

The heart of Leadpages is, obviously, its landing page maker. This creator provides: 

Drag and drop editing – Leadpages totally revised the editor in 2016 to include drag and drop, and the new experience is intuitive and error-free. 

130+ free templates + a massive marketplace of paying templates – These allow you to easily create new landing pages and all you have to do is change the text and click publish.

A plethora of marketing integrations – Link to your preferred email marketing program, webinar tool, CRM, payment gateway, and more. 

Landing pages hosted by Leadpages – Leadpages manages all of the landing pages for you, but you can also use your own domain name. 

A plethora of website integrations – Leadpages also makes it easier to link to your website.

There is a dedicated Leadpages WordPress plugin, for example, as well as several other website integrations for Squarespace, Joomla, and other platforms. 

Simple A/B testing – You can easily launch a new split test to determine which iterations of your landing pages work better.

Detailed analytics – Not only does Leadpages have in-dashboard analytics, but it also makes it easier to set up Facebook Pixel, Google Analytics, and other monitoring resources. 

But that's Leadpages' landing page creator... 

It does, however, have a few other "lead" labeled features. They are as follows:

Leadboxes are custom-designed pop-up types that can be displayed automatically or in response to a user's behaviour. You can also connect a button created in the landing page builder to a Leadbox to quickly generate a conversion-boosting two-step opt-in.

Leadlinks allow you to sign up current subscribers to a deal with a single click. You may, for example, sign them up for a webinar or a sublist simply by sending them a connection. 

Leaddigits – This one is a little more specialized, but it helps your leads to sign up for your mailing list or webinar using their smart phones and automatic text messages.

While the key value remains the landing page maker, these smaller enhancements will help you do some cool stuff while still integrating well with the landing page designer.

How to Make a Leadpages Landing Page 


Now that you know what to expect on a theoretical basis, let's get a bit more...hands-on with this Leadpages analysis. 

That is, I will guide you through the gui, share my opinions, and explain how you can adapt Leadpages functionality to your unique business needs.

To create a new landing page, simply press the following button in the Leadpages interface:

Then, Leadpages will prompt you to choose one of the 130+ free templates. 

They also offer you the option of using the old Standard editor (as opposed to the new Drag & Drop editor). Although the simplicity is cool, the older experience is inferior to the redesigned editor, so I suggest that you still use the default Drag & Drop templates.

Of course, you can still begin with a totally blank canvas. But, since I believe one of Leadpages' most valuable assets is its template library, I'm going to demonstrate modifying one of the free templates for this review:

When you pick a template, Leadpages prompts you to give the page an internal name before launching you into the drag-and-drop editor. 


A closer look at Leadpages' drag-and-drop creator 

If you've ever worked with a WordPress page maker, you'll feel right at home in the Leadpages writer.

You'll see a live preview of your website on the right side of the screen. In addition, on the left sidebar, you can access: 

Widgets – These are the elements that make up your website. A widget, for example, will be used to attach a new opt-in type or a press. 

Page Layout – Using rows and columns, you can build the foundational grid layout for your page.

Page Styles – This tab helps you to configure fonts, background images, and other features. 

Page Monitoring – Allows you to configure specific SEO settings (such as the meta title) as well as tracking and analytics code (like Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics)

So, how easy is it to use the Leadpages editor?


Although it is not as free-form as the Instapage constructor, it is rather adaptable. To shift an element, for example, simply drag it to a new location:

Overall, it is fairly straightforward and, most critically, code-free. That is, even though you've never seen a line of coding in your life, you should be able to create attractive and successful landing pages. 


Using Leadpages to provide a call to action (CTA). 


If you're creating landing pages, you're definitely going to have at least one call to action (CTA) on the website, right?

At the very least, I hope so! The effective use of a CTA button is a critical component of landing page optimization. 

Since it's so crucial, I'd like to take a closer peek at Leadpages' Button widget. 

When you click on any of the button widgets, you will be presented with a new range of options:


The two middle solutions are straightforward. They allow you to customize the font and font size. 

Colors of buttons and text 

However, the opportunities on the periphery open up some exciting possibilities. 

To start, by clicking the button on the left, you gain access to the ability to easily switch between various interface styles:


Though this isn't a big deal, it does make it easy to produce trendy buttons without knowing a lot about design. Some other landing pages, for example, would require you to manually configure the radius and shadows to achieve these results, but Leadpages allows you to do so simply by choosing a preset alternative.

This is a feature that I really like in Thrive Architect, so it's nice to see it in Leadpages as well. 

Second, the hyperlink button not only allows you to designate a URL to which the button should be sent; it also allows you to conveniently link to another Leadpage or Leadbox that you've created:


This is very useful because it allows you to quickly build two-step opt-ins, which are a great way to improve your conversion rate. 

Via a two-step opt-in, the visitors press the button to open a new pop-up with the signup information, rather than you simply showing certain details at the top of the screen. 

Leadpages simplifies the process. It's also adaptable so you can customize each of the popups with the same drag-and-drop editor (more on these later on in the review).

Let see how adaptable the forms widget is. 


Another thing you'll definitely want to do on your landing pages is show some sort of type, right? 

You have full control of all of the forms on your landing pages while you use the Leadpages Type widget. 

When you click on a Form widget, a new sidebar area appears in which you can modify any part of your form:


You can do in the above sidebar interface: 

  • Link to email marketing or webinar facilities. 
  • Create new fields. 
  • Choose the action you want accomplish when the user hits the send button. 

The Action section is awesome cos you can choose to either: 

  • Maintain the user's attention on the website. 
  • Move them to another tab (like a thank you page) 
  • Send them a register, making it simple to produce lead magnets.



Getting started with payments and the checkout widget 

The Checkout widget is the last person widget I'd like to analyze. This is a relatively new feature that allows you to accept Stripe payments and offer digital products:

Essentially, this widget allows you to use your Leadpages and Leadboxes to market items such as eBooks and other digital goods. 

Event admission tickets (like a private webinar) 

Furthermore, Leadpages has plans to add upsells and downsells, though these items are still on the roadmap. 

While there are responsive previews, there is no responsive drag and drop editor.

You're obviously aware of the significance of mobile traffic, which is why you can ensure that your landing pages look just as fine on mobile devices as they do on desktops. 

Leadpages has a readily readable sensitive preview in the top right of the editor to assist you in determining this:


This takes me to one minor critique. This is just a sneak peek. You can't really build your page using the responsive settings, which Instapage helps you to do. 

Although Leadpages does a decent job of making your designs sensitive, a little more control here would be great. 


Publishing your landing page, either independently or by WordPress

If you've finished building your landing page, simply press the Publish button to have it live on a Leadpages subdomain:


However, keeping it on a subdomain does not lend it a respectable appearance, so you can probably merge it into the web so that you can use your own domain name. 

Leadpages has a plethora of tools for doing so, including a customizable HTML alternative that should fit for the majority of sites. 

But here's what I really like:

All you have to do with this plugin is log in to your Leadpages account from your WordPress dashboard and then import Leadpages content as needed: 


What's really appealing here are the extra features that allow you to: 

Make use of your Leadpage as a welcoming gate (the first page any visitor will see)

When it comes to the slip testing... 

Creating A/B checks to boost the efficiency of your pages 

Leadpages makes it easy to start new split experiments straight from your dashboard: 



When you press the button, you'll be able to choose your control page and then add as many research variants as you like. 

You can make a variation by copying the control page and making a few modifications, or you can use a totally new page:


You can also pick traffic distributions to monitor how much traffic goes to each version, which is a good added benefit.

Analyzing metrics to see how the sites are doing 


Finally, though you can still combine Leadpages with third-party analytics software, Leadpages also has an analytics tab that offers a simple analysis of traffic and conversion rates for all of your landing pages.

Although you can also use a more detailed analytics service, these are good for providing a quick rundown of the health of your landing pages. 

Leadpages can be used to build the whole website (2019 update) 


When I first wrote this Leadpages analysis, you could only create landing pages using the drag-and-drop Leadpages builder. That is the features you saw earlier.

However, in early 2019, Leadpages released a new product that allows you to use the same builder style to create your entire website. Yes, Leadpages, like Squarespace and Wix, allows you to create complete standalone websites. 

I won't go into too much depth here because the real building experience is somewhat close to what you experienced with landing pages above.

Only now can you have new choices for managing sitewide settings, such as your navigation menus:


You can begin by selecting from a variety of premade website templates, just as you can with landing pages. Then all you have to do is tailor them to your specific requirements:

How to Make a Leadbox Using Leadpages


You can begin by selecting from a variety of premade website templates, just as you can with landing pages. Then all you have to do is tailor them to your specific requirements:

How to Make a Leadbox Using Leadpages


When you post the Leadbox, you will be able to decide how it will be triggered. 

It can be caused by a: 

  • Link in plain text 
  • Link to a button 
  • Picture URL 
  • Popup with a timer 
  • Popup indicating desire to leave

What's cool is that you can conveniently embed a Leadbox in material that isn't a Leadpages landing page using these options. 

You may, for example, use the plain text connection to have a two-step opt-in in a daily WordPress post or page, giving you a lot of versatility. 


How to Make Warning Bars Using Leadpages

In addition to launching the complete website builder in early 2019, Leadpages also launched Warning Bars, a new feature to help you improve conversion rates. This are also known as warning bars. 

You can now design eye-catching, sensitive bars for use in: 

Promote exclusive deals 

Encourage signups (e.g. to a webinar) 

Expand your contact address

To get started, pick one of the pre-made templates and configure the text: 

Then, you can publish the warning bar for all Leadpages-created landing pages/sites and standalone sites created by another app (like WordPress).

You'll also have access to the same fantastic metrics to monitor the progress of your bar. 

The only feature I'd like to see incorporated is the opportunity to A/B monitor your warning bars, which you don't seem to have right now. This functionality is recent, but hopefully A/B checking will be introduced in the future!

Leadlinks and Leaddigits are two minor but useful functions.

Finally, I'd like to sum up the hands-on portion of my Leadpages analysis by reviewing two minor features:

You won't depend on these as much, but they do allow you to do some pretty cool stuff. 

You may use Leadlinks to create a connection that automatically signs subscribers up for a sublist or webinar with a single click.

This is helpful for delivering an email blast to the subscribers about an upcoming webinar, for example. Instead of forcing subscribers to re-enter their records, you can sign them up as soon as they click the page. 

No pressure equals more conversions!

Leaddigits allows you to do the same thing, but only text messages. You will encourage your customers to opt-in via cell phone and then connect them to a particular email list or webinar: 

This is perhaps the most niche feature, but if it appeals to the target demographic, the versatility is pretty cool. 

What is the price of Leadpages?

Leadpages pricing begins at $27 a month, billed annually. But... 

The most affordable package does not include: 

A/B break research 

Leadboxes are a form of leadbox. 

Leaddigits or Leadlinks are payment widgets. 

If you want those options, as well as some other more sophisticated features, you'll have to go for one of the more expensive plans, which start at $59/month (billed annually).

The strengths and pitfalls of Leadpages 


Advantages 


  • An easy-to-use drag-and-drop editor for beginners 
  • There are over 200 free templates available, as well as many more premium templates. 
  • A/B tests are simple to construct. 
  • Analytics built-in 
  • Opt-ins are as simple as two stages. 
  • A nice range of widgets 
  • Asset distribution of lead magnet features


  • There are various integrations for email marketing systems, as well as webinar services and others. 
  • Helpful new features in Leadboxes, Leadlinks, and Leaddigits 
  • NEW: Create complete conversion-optimized websites with just a few clicks (no need for a website builder like Wix) 
  • NEW: Alert bars allow you to add “notification” type forms and CTAs to your website. 


The disadvantages

  • Although a responsive preview is available, you cannot build the responsive version of your page. 
  • Leadpages' price takes it out of reach for the majority of novice users. 
  • Since not all features are included in the lowest category, it gets much more costly if you try to do stuff like A/B test pages. 


Should you build your landing pages with Leadpages?

Leadpages is a fantastic tool in terms of functionality. It is unquestionably more efficient than a WordPress page maker. 

The only stumbling block is the price, which is very high in contrast to a WordPress page builder solution. However, it is a fully hosted solution with a website builder and landing page builder built in.

Leadpages would not disappoint you if you want a super simple way to build beautiful landing pages through various platforms, as well as advanced features like Leadboxes, plenty of integrations, and A/B checking. 

You just ought to ensure that certain features have a nice ROI for you, either in terms of increased sales or time saved.

You don't have to wonder, however, because Leadpages provides a 14-day free trial, allowing you to sign up and see if the additional features are worth the additional expense.
